FOR STUDENTS

Aaniin! (Hello!)
Bashkwaanakwat n'dizhnikas!
My name is Bursting Cloud!
I am Anishinaabe. I will be your guide as you work through this journey of new learning and discovery :-)
First, let me tell you a bit about my name as I am sure you might be wondering. Although we come from very different nations, it is a customary practice for many Indigenous peoples to be given a special name sometimes referred to as a spirit name (called noozawin). There are many different ways to receive your name and sometimes you might even be given several different names throughout your life. It provides the purpose of what your life is about and how you can help others during your time here. Often it is hard to translate from Anishinaabe into English and it loses some of the meaning. For example, my name, Bashkwaanakwat, means Bursting Cloud, but it actually means more than that. It is when there is a cloud, and it suddenly bursts out raining. This is just a brief explanation. It is who I am as an Anishinaabekwe and how the ancestors recognize me. We are spiritual people and have a spiritual connection to everything. This is why our names are important to us.

Introduction

You will be going on a journey. Throughout this journey you will learn from special people called Knowledge Keepers. They are people who carry a certain type of knowledge that is considered very special and unique. Along the way there will be opportunities to explore activities connected to the knowledge being shared.
There are MANY ways to come to know and understand our universe. Unfortunately for a long time now, only one way has been accepted by the main stream education system as being "true" and that has been the 'Western Scientific' view.
It is important to understand the significance of Indigenous Knowledge. It can actually help us to understand subjects like math and science! |
In fact, often times 'Western Science' is actually just catching up to what Indigenous Peoples have known for thousands of years.
It is only when we bring all of our knowledge systems together, we will begin to unravel the mysteries of the universe and our role within it!
It is only when we bring all of our knowledge systems together, we will begin to unravel the mysteries of the universe and our role within it!
These folks have come together to work on this resource to share their knowledge and understandings with us. We are excited to highlight and bring together multiple knowledge systems. There are Indigenous Indigenous knowledge systems represented by Isaac, Tehahendeh, Sandra, Douglas, Hohepa, Dana and Wilfred, as well as Western knowledge systems represented by Carlos and Daniella who work with NASA.

The Importance of Stories
Stories can be a powerful way to convey and remember important information. Stories can also connect us to who we are and the importance in the world. Have a listen to Sandra as she explains...
